Frames are important aesthetical elements and in some ways "complete" the overall look of the painting. Sometimes the artistic quality of a frame can even exceed the value of the painting in it. Frames are very important decorative elements in antique mirrors and other art objects. Frames like other antiques suffer various losses over time. Carvings and gesso elements often get broken and lost. The structure of the frame weakens due to harmful environmental conditions. The surface accumulates dust, dirt, and mold; the gilding darkens or sometimes gets coated with layers of cheap paint.
We can clean off accumulated dirt, remove applications of non-original paint, consolidate the deteriorating surface, reinforce the structure, make missing elements and ornamentation, apply gilding in restored areas, and match it to the original tone and patina.
In addition to frames we can also restore gilding on furniture, wooden statues, and architectural elements.
